Schools Scarecrow Comp sees creative entries

Fivemiletown Primary School has bagged itself a new Green House thanks to its innovative scarecrow creation Reclaimed Roger taking first place at Mid Ulster District Council’s Recycled Scarecrow Competition.

The competition took place as part of the Council’s ongoing Waste Education and Awareness Activity.

Ten Primary Schools from throughout the district took part in the competition and submitted their scarecrow creations which had to combine straw and recycled material.

The challenge aimed to enhance children’s understanding of the importance of recycling and reusing materials and to raise awareness of waste issues and the need to care for the environment.

The scarecrows had to fulfil certain criteria including: they had to be made from materials which would be recycled or sent to landfill, they couldn’t be larger than 2 metres high and 1.3 metres wide and they must have a name and a theme.

The 17 scarecrows that were submitted were displayed at Meadowbank Sports Arena during the Straw Festival on Saturday, 4 June and proved a very popular attraction for children and adults alike.

Cookstown Primary School took second place for its scarecrow Rubbish Ruby winning them a table top propagator and St. Mary’s Primary School, Ballygawley came in third with its entry Simpson and His Shining Steed Silver winning them a potting bench and assorted pots.

Windmill Integrated Primary School Dunagnnon narrowly missed out on a spot in the top 3 with its entry The Windmill Hatter being Highly Commended.

The three winning scarecrows were displayed at the Council’s Walled Garden Maghera and will remain there for a period in the summer.

Speaking about the competition Deputy Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Sharon McAleer, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to see such innovative and imaginative creations coming from young school children. I was genuinely amazed when I saw the scarecrows on display at the fabulous Walled Garden Maghera, they look like works of art. The work the children put into them is phenomenal and is a real credit to them, their teachers and their schools.”
