A Feathered Visitor at Windmill
A Feathered Visitor at Windmill
On Friday we had an unusual visitor arrive on the school grounds when a swan landed on the grass beside the school. The children were fascinated to see such a beautiful bird up close and it certainly created a lot of interest and discussion throughout the day.
However, it soon became clear that the swan may have been injured. Many of the children were concerned about its wellbeing, which was lovely to see and really demonstrated the kindness and care that our pupils show towards animals and the world around them.
We contacted the NSPCA, and a kind gentleman came to safely collect the swan so that it could receive the care it needs. The children were relieved to know that the bird would be looked after properly.
Interestingly, the visit also linked well with some of the learning currently taking place in school. In After School Club, Mrs Hazelton has been creating artwork inspired by birds and nature and the swan provided some real-life inspiration. It also connected nicely with the work our Primary 6 pupils are doing with the Children of Lir as part of their Myths and Legends literacy project, where swans often feature in traditional stories and legends.
Although it was an unexpected visit, it turned into a valuable learning moment for the children and a wonderful example of the caring ethos we try to foster at Windmill.
